LaTUCS is one of many university choirs around the country - we have sibling choirs at Monash University (MonUCS)
, RMIT (ROCS)
, Adelaide (AUCS)
, Perth (PUCS)
, Canberra (SCUNA)
, several at University of Sydney (SUMS
, MADS, St Andrew's College Chapel Choir), and the University of Queensland (QUMS)
Note that (for most choirs)
you do not have to be a university student or staff member to participate, and there are no auditions, and no pressure; it is a relaxed, safe and fun environment in which to indulge in some great music.
Intervarsity Choral Festivals ("IVs")
Every year since 1950, university choirs across Australia have taken turns to host an annual Intervarsity Choral Festival ("IV"). This has happened no less than 70 times since then, the latest being Adelaide in January 2019. Unfortunately, COVID-19 meant we had to postpone the festivals for 2020 & 2021.
A movement unique worldwide, the very first Intervarsity Choral Festival took place in 1950 when the Sydney University Musical Society (SUMS) and Melbourne University Choral Society (MUCS) joined forces to put on a combined concert.
These festivals are a major highlight of the choral year, when the members of all the choirs come together, rehearse together, socialise together, and ultimately perform a major combined work which most of the choirs could not perform on their own.
Music has included Verdi's Requiem, Orff's Carmina Burana, Berstein's Chichester Psalms, Beethoven's Missa Solemnis.
Venues have included the Melbourne Concert Hall, Melbourne Town Hall, Sydney Opera House, Sydney Town Hall, Brisbane City Hall, Hobart's Festival of Voices, the Perth International Arts Festival and many of the nation's capital city cathedrals.
The next festival is the 71st Intervarsity Choral Festival, to be held in Brisbane & south-east Queensland. (Note: Deferred due to COVID.) Click here for more information.
AICSA - www.aicsa.org.au
Collectively these choirs form an association known as the Australian Intervarsity Choral Societies Association (or "AICSA") which was set up by the choirs in the mid 1970's to better collaborate and provide support services for each other.
Other choirs have come & gone over the years, including the University of New South Wales Choral Society (UNCS), Macquarie University Singers (MUS), Tasmania University Musical Society (TUMS) and Flinders University Choral Society (yes, really!)
AICSA doesn't include all the choirs at all the universities around the country - there are other choirs at Melbourne, Newcastle, etc which are not affiliated with AICSA, but AICSA supports & encourages participation in choral music at all tertiary institutions.
AICSA also co-ordinates the annual Intervarsity Choral Festivals ("IVs").
